Lecce (Apulia). Basilica of Santa Croce (1549). Baroque. Particular.
I have had this image since childhood in dozens of postcards that received my dear aunt from Lecce, so that for years I had a recurring thought: will I ever go to Lecce to see this church? When it finally happened the church was in restoration, so I did what I could ... Lecce still deserves a nice visit regardless.
The construction of Santa Croce lasted two centuries. The lateral niches at the central rosette, house the statues of St. Benedict and Saint Peter Celestino (Pietro Angeleiro from Morrone), but it is only a detail of the many that characterize the charming facade.
The interior, to Latin cross, welcomes 14 baroque chapels and 16 altars.
